Cottonseed Oil Production Line

Complete solutions with dephenolization for safe, edible cottonseed oil

A Major Oilseed with Unique Processing Requirements

Cottonseed is one of the world's most important oilseeds, with global production exceeding 45 million metric tons annually. Cottonseed contains 15-25% oil and 20-25% protein, making it a valuable dual-purpose crop for both edible oil and animal feed. The unique challenge in cottonseed processing is gossypol — a natural polyphenolic compound found in pigment glands throughout the seed. Gossypol is toxic to monogastric animals and must be removed or deactivated to produce safe, edible cottonseed oil and meal. Huatai's dephenolization technology effectively addresses this challenge. Our complete cottonseed oil lines cover the full process: delinting, hulling, pre-pressing, solvent extraction, dephenolization, and refining. Capacities range from 30 to 1000 TPD. Each plant is engineered for efficient linter recovery, high oil yield, and production of detoxified cottonseed meal.

Cottonseed Oil Production Steps

From cottonseed to refined, dephenolized edible oil and high-protein meal.

The line runs through 8 stages. The strip gives the sequence at a glance; the notes below cover temperatures, pressures and yields for each stage.

Step 1
Delinting
Mechanical linter removal (safer than acid)
Step 2
Hulling
Beater or disc huller, kernel-shell separation
Step 3
Flaking
Roller mill, 0.2-0.3 mm flakes
Step 4
Cooking
5-stage cooker, 95-110°C, moisture conditioning
Step 5
Pressing
Screw press, 16-18% residual oil in cake
Step 6
Solvent Extraction
Optional, reduces residual to <1%
Step 7
Refining
Chemical refining: degumming, neutralization, bleaching, deodorization
Step 8
Meal Processing
Hull + meal to feed, optional 36% protein upgrade

1. Delinting

Short linter fibers (2-6 mm) are removed from cottonseed using saw delinting machines. First-cut linters are a valuable by-product for paper, cellulose, and chemical industries.

2. Hulling

Delinted seeds pass through disc hullers to separate the tough outer hull (40-45% of seed weight) from the oil-rich kernel. Hulls are used as roughage in cattle feed or as biomass fuel.

3. Pre-pressing

Hulled kernels are flaked, cooked, and fed into screw presses. Pre-pressing extracts 60-70% of available oil at moderate pressure, producing a partially defatted cake for solvent extraction.

4. Solvent Extraction

Pre-pressed cake is extracted with hexane to recover residual oil. Counter-current extractor design achieves less than 1% residual oil in meal. Complete solvent recovery system with mineral oil absorption.

5. Dephenolization

Gossypol is removed from crude cottonseed oil during the refining process through specialized alkali treatment and adsorption. This critical step ensures the oil is safe for human consumption and the meal is safe for animal feed.

6. Refining

Neutralization removes free fatty acids and residual gossypol. Bleaching removes the characteristic dark cottonseed oil color. Deodorization under high vacuum produces a bland, stable, light-colored refined cottonseed oil.

Key Equipment Systems

Each system is designed and manufactured in-house under ISO 9001 quality management.

Delinting SystemSaw delinting machines with adjustable blade clearance for first-cut and second-cut lint removal. Lint cleaning and baling system for commercial-grade cotton linters as a valuable by-product revenue stream.
Hulling & SeparationDisc huller with adjustable gap settings for different seed sizes and moisture levels. Multi-stage aspiration and screening system for clean kernel-hull separation. Achieves hull content below 3% in kernels.
Pre-pressing SystemFlaking mill for kernel preparation, multi-layer stack cooker for conditioning (temperature and moisture optimization), and screw oil expeller for mechanical pressing. Produces high-quality crude oil and press cake.
Solvent ExtractionContinuous chain-type extractor with counter-current percolation, DTDC for meal desolventizing-toasting (with gossypol binding), and complete miscella evaporation and solvent recovery system.
Refining with DephenolizationSpecialized refining line: acid degumming, high-dosage alkali neutralization for gossypol removal, vacuum bleaching with activated earth, and continuous deodorizer. Final oil meets all international edible oil standards for free gossypol content (below 0.02%).

Technical Highlights

Engineering innovations for safe, efficient cottonseed oil processing.

Effective Gossypol Removal

Our dephenolization process combines optimized alkali treatment with specialized adsorption to reduce free gossypol in refined oil below 0.02% — well within Codex Alimentarius and national food safety standards for edible cottonseed oil.

Maximum Linter Recovery Value

Our two-stage delinting system recovers first-cut linters (long fibers, high value for specialty paper and cellulose) and second-cut linters (short fibers, for chemical cellulose). Linter sales can offset 8-12% of raw material costs.

Dual-Purpose Meal: Feed & Fertilizer

Our DTDC system binds residual gossypol to protein during toasting, producing cottonseed meal with free gossypol below 0.04% (safe for ruminant feed). Alternatively, low-toasting mode produces high-nitrogen organic fertilizer.

Cottonseed Protein Concentrate Option

As an upgrade path, we offer technology for producing cottonseed protein concentrate with protein content above 60%, suitable for aquaculture and poultry feed — creating additional revenue from the same raw material.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to the questions buyers ask us before placing an order.

What capacity of cottonseed line do you offer?

From 30 TPD (small press line) to 1,000 TPD (industrial crushing + refining). We have delivered multiple 100 TPD pressing lines in India, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan.

Mechanical press or full solvent extraction?

For cottonseed, the choice depends on your scale and your meal target. Pressing gives 18-20% residual oil; solvent brings it to under 1%. For small-medium scale (up to 100 TPD), pressing is usually the better economic choice.

How do you handle gossypol in the meal?

Our refining process reduces free gossypol to safe levels for ruminant feed. For poultry feed, additional treatment may be needed (e.g., solvent extraction plus post-extraction heat treatment).

Can you use cottonseed as a second feedstock in a multi-oilseed plant?

Yes. With some cleaning/flaking adjustments, cottonseed can be processed in a line designed for soybean or sunflower. We have delivered multi-oilseed plants in India and Egypt.

What is the refining yield for cottonseed oil?

Crude cottonseed oil has 1-2% gums, 0.5-1% free fatty acids, and dark color due to gossypol. The refining loss is typically 5-8% of crude oil weight — higher than most other oils.

Do you deliver the full line including the hulling step?

Yes, including the delinter, huller, kernel/shell separator, flaking roll, cooker, press, refining train, and meal processing. The hull is sold as a high-value by-product to the particle board industry.

What capacity should I choose for a Cottonseed Oil Production Line?

Capacity depends on how much raw material you can secure year-round, not on how much you would like to sell. Tell us your daily or monthly feedstock availability, the local season pattern and your target market, and we size the line so it runs near full load most of the year instead of sitting idle between harvests.

Can the line be expanded later?

Yes. We build these plants in modules, so you can start with pressing and add solvent extraction, refining or fractionation once volume justifies it. We reserve the floor space, utility capacity and pipe racks for the later stages during the first installation, which costs very little at the time and saves a rebuild later.

Do you handle installation and training for a Cottonseed Oil Production Line?

We deliver on an EPC turnkey basis. Our engineers supervise foundation setting, erection and commissioning on site, run the line through performance testing, and train your operators and maintenance crew before handover. You receive a running plant, not a crate of parts.

What about spare parts and after-sales support?

Wear parts for the presses, filters and pumps are stocked as standard and ship with the plant as a recommended spares package. After commissioning our team stays reachable for remote troubleshooting, and we can place a service engineer on site for major overhauls.

How long does delivery take?

Lead time depends on capacity, configuration and how much custom engineering your site needs. Rather than quote a number that will not hold, we confirm a firm design, manufacturing and shipping schedule alongside the proposal, broken down by stage so you can plan civil works around it.

What do you need from me to prepare a quotation?

Three things are enough to start: your raw material and its typical oil content, your target capacity in tonnes per day, and the destination port or country. Send those over and we come back with a process flow, equipment list and budget estimate. Send your requirements on WhatsApp and we will take it from there.
