A buyer in Tanzania asked a fair question on our second call: when does oil actually come out? Nobody could hand him a number, and that silence cost him a season of planning. So we walk him through the sequence instead, stage by stage, so he knows what follows the signature and where projects tend to stall.

Twelve stages sit between a signed contract and packed product leaving your gate. A few run in parallel. Most delays come from only three of them.

1. Feasibility: feedstock and capacity

Everything downstream rests on two answers. What arrives at your gate, and how much of it. Seed type, seasonality, oil content and how long material sits before processing decide the route. Capacity then fixes the equipment list. Skipping this stage is the costliest shortcut on offer, since every later decision inherits its mistakes.

2. Process scheme and quotation

With feed and capacity settled, the flow sheet takes shape. Preparation, pressing, extraction, refining, filling. Each section carries options, and those options are where quotations diverge. On oilseeds worth extracting, a solvent extraction section follows the pre-press; on others, pressing alone is right.

3. Contract and payment milestones

The contract should name deliverables, technical guarantees, inspection rights and the milestone schedule. Tie each payment to something verifiable, such as witnessed factory testing or shipping documents. Loose milestone wording triggers more arguments than any technical clause we have read, because both parties stand at the same sentence holding rather different pictures of what it means, and steel has usually been cut before anyone notices the gap.

4. Detailed design

General arrangement, foundations, piping, electrical schematics, utilities and control philosophy all get fixed here. Your civil contractor needs these drawings before breaking ground. Revisions after this point ripple straight into manufacturing, so review them properly the first time.

5. Manufacturing

Vessels, presses, extractors, conveyors and tanks enter production. Long-lead items such as large motors and gearboxes get ordered early, because they gate everything behind them. This is the stage buyers most want photographs of, and the one where quality is hardest to check afterwards, since a weld that fails in your plant a year later looks entirely sound in a picture taken under flattering workshop light.

6. Factory acceptance testing

Before anything ships, assembled equipment runs in our workshop. Motors turn, seals hold, controls respond, and you or your inspector watch it happen. 7. Shipping and customs

Packing lists, bills of lading, certificates of origin and import permits move next. Containers, flat racks and break bulk each suit different pieces. Paperwork at the port stalls more projects than any machine ever has, and the plant sits paid for and idle while it is sorted.

8. Civil works and utilities

While equipment is on the water, your site gets foundations, drainage, power, steam, water treatment and compressed air. Site services are what hold up commissioning later. Build them early. Waiting until the steel has landed, then discovering the boiler is still on a vessel of its own, is a mistake we watch repeat itself far more often than it should.

9. Installation

Our engineers supervise unloading, positioning, alignment, welding and wiring. Local crews handle much of the physical work. Supervision is what decides whether a machine still runs true after its first season instead of shaking itself loose. Anchor bolts set out of tolerance cause weeks of grief. Survey twice.

10. Commissioning and trial runs

Water first, then seed. Run it empty, then light, then full. Watch temperatures, vibration, solvent losses and product quality as load climbs. Trial runs always surface small faults. That is precisely what they exist for.

11. Training and acceptance

Operators learn start-up, steady running, shutdown and how to respond when alarms fire. Maintenance staff learn lubrication intervals and wear parts. Acceptance should be signed against criteria you agreed in writing, never against optimism.

12. Spare parts and after-sales

Wear parts travel with the plant: screens, press worms, belts, seals, filter cloths. That kit keeps you running while a shipment is still at sea. Agree response channels and stocking recommendations before the last engineer flies home.

Where projects actually slip

Site services landing late. Steam and power gate everything else.

Feedstock unlike the sample. Test what you intend to run, not what looked good in a photograph.

Port paperwork. Chase permits before the vessel sails.

Design changes mid-build. Freeze the flow sheet once, and mean it.

Training squeezed into the last week. What operators learn while tired gets forgotten by month two.
