Sunflower Oil: Mechanical Press vs Solvent Extraction — Which Pays Off?

Sunflower oil pressing and pretreatment plant

If you're planning a sunflower oil plant, you'll hit the same fork in the road we see on almost every quote we send out. Press the seed with a screw press, or pre-press it and then run solvent extraction? Sounds like a technical detail. It isn't. It decides how much oil you actually keep, what you spend up front, and whether the plant ever pays for itself. Get it wrong and you're either throwing oil into the cake or paying for a solvent plant you didn't need.

Start with the seed, not the machine

Sunflower runs somewhere between 38 and 50 percent oil, depending on the variety. Oil-type seed is closer to 40 or 45, confectionery is lower. None of that comes out clean unless you prep the seed first. And prep is where most plants quietly lose money. We clean it, pull the metal out, then dehull. The hulls are nearly all fiber and almost no oil. Leave them in the press and you choke your throughput and you thin out the protein in the meal. After dehulling we flake the kernels to about 0.3 mm and cook them at 80 to 95 degrees so the cell walls soften. Skip this step and it honestly doesn't matter which route you picked. You'll still leave oil behind.

Pressing by itself

A screw press pulls out maybe 70 to 80 percent of the oil and leaves 6 to 8 percent in the cake. For a small line, say 1 to 20 tonnes a day, or for someone selling cold-pressed "natural" sunflower oil, pressing alone is usually right. You spend less to build it. No hexane on site. The cake goes straight to a feed yard. The problem is that 6 to 8 percent. At any real volume that's a lot of oil leaving through the back gate. It's why the bigger lines add extraction. We've built oil pressing equipment from 1 TPD pilot units up to 50 TPD screw presses.

Where solvent comes in

Pre-press plus solvent extraction takes the cake from the press, still 15 to 20 percent oil in it, and runs it through a rotary or loop extractor with food-grade hexane. Residual drops under 1 percent. A DTDC desolventizes the meal and pulls most of the solvent back. We put this on anything past about 30 to 50 tonnes a day. It's the part of the plant that actually makes the money. The solvent extraction equipment we supply is built around that recovery step, because if you don't recover the solvent you bleed cash.

Sunflower oil mechanical press vs solvent extraction process flow

A mistake we see a lot

Buyers sometimes size the solvent plant for the capacity they hope to reach in year three, not what they're running now. Below roughly 20 tonnes a day, press only makes sense. Between 20 and 50, pre-press plus extraction starts paying off. Over 50, it's hard to justify doing it any other way. The solvent side costs real money to build and to permit. But those costs spread across enough volume that the extra oil covers them. Under the breakpoint, the meal you gain usually isn't worth the hexane, the energy, and the paperwork that comes with it. One 40 TPD line we quoted last year was sized for 80. We talked them down. They're running fine at 40 and can add the extractor later if volume shows up.

Meal is the second product

Dehulled, solvent-extracted sunflower meal lands around 28 to 32 percent protein. Poultry and dairy feeders pay for that. If you've got that market close by, extraction pays back quicker. If you're chasing a cold-press niche, you keep the residual higher on purpose and skip the solvent for the label. Either way, dehulling is what sets your meal quality. The part that decides the deal

A 50 tonnes a day pre-press plus extraction line costs more than a press-only line of the same seed capacity. But run the numbers. 15,000 tonnes a year of seed at roughly $900 a tonne of oil. That seven points of extra yield is close to $945,000 a year you were leaving in the cake. Most lines we've built take under two years to earn it back. A solvent recovery system plus DTDC keep the running costs from getting out of hand.
