40 T/D Cottonseed Oil Pressing and 15 T/D Refining Project in Nigeria

This project is a 40 T/D cottonseed oil pressing line paired with a 15 T/D refining line, designed, manufactured, installed and commissioned by Huatai in Nigeria. It is the first modern cottonseed oil factory in the local area.

That last sentence is the one that matters. Before this plant, cottonseed in the region was either sold as raw seed or pressed on small expellers that left most of the oil behind and produced a cake nobody could sell at a decent price. The gap was not ambition. It was equipment.

Cottonseed is not soybean

Anyone who has run both will tell you cottonseed is the more awkward feedstock. Three reasons, and each one drives a piece of the plant design.

• Lint. Cottonseed arrives with fibre still attached. Delinting has to happen before anything else, and the recovered linters are worth selling rather than burning.
• Gossypol. Cottonseed carries gossypol, a pigment that is toxic to non-ruminants and darkens the oil badly if it is allowed to bind during cooking. Temperature and moisture control through cooking is what keeps it from wrecking both the oil colour and the meal value.
• Hulls. They are hard, abrasive and hold almost no oil. Decorticating them off raises the oil content of what actually goes through the press, and taking them out also removes a lot of the colour problem.

Skip any of the three and the plant still runs. It just runs at a loss.

How the 40 T/D line is laid out

The front end is pretreatment and pressing: delinting, cleaning and de-stoning, decorticating to separate hulls from meats, flaking, cooking, then screw pressing. Cooking is the step operators most often get wrong — too dry and the press overheats; too wet and oil recovery drops. The cooker on this line is set up so moisture can be adjusted on the fly rather than left at whatever the morning shift set it to.

The back end is a 15 T/D refinery. Cottonseed oil typically comes out of the press with high free fatty acid and a dark red colour, so the refining train is specified for that load rather than for a clean seed oil:

• Degumming to pull out phosphatides before they cause trouble downstream.
• Neutralising with caustic — at this FFA level caustic is the right call, not physical refining.
• Bleaching with activated earth to bring the colour down.
• Deodorising under vacuum at high temperature to strip the remaining FFA and the odour compounds.

Sizing a plant like this

40 T/D is a deliberate size. It is large enough that the refining line runs continuously rather than in campaigns, and small enough that a single press train and one shift of operators cover it. For a market where seed is seasonal and trucked in over variable distances, that balance matters more than nameplate capacity.

It also leaves room to grow. The building, the steam system and the utilities on this site were laid out with a second press train in mind, so doubling throughput later is an equipment purchase rather than a construction project.

Delivered turnkey

Huatai handled process design, manufacture, shipping, installation, commissioning and operator training. On a first-of-its-kind plant in a region, the training is not a formality — there is no local pool of experienced cottonseed operators to hire from, so the crew running the line has to be built from scratch.
